Unidentified individuals have engaged in fraudulent activities by creating X (formerly Twitter) accounts using the name of Peter Odey, the deputy governor of Cross River State. The public has been targeted by these impostors in an attempt to deceive and scam them.
On Thursday, Fred Abua, Odey’s press secretary, expressed concern after a national newspaper reported that Odey had urged the public to support Dr. Betta Edu, the suspended minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, in relation to an alleged N585 million scandal. Abua clarified that Odey does not have a Twitter account and stated, “This account is operated by scammers. His Excellency is currently only active on Facebook.”
The impostors persist in their fraudulent activities despite the disclaimers issued by Odey’s office. They continue to create new social media accounts, impersonating various high-profile personalities, with the sole intention of defrauding unsuspecting individuals.
Abua emphasized that his boss could not have made any public statements regarding the ongoing investigation into the N585 million case, as the state government has not yet taken a position on the matter.
The specific post attributed to Odey on X stated: “Dear Dr. Betta Edu, you will emerge stronger! We stand by you. I trust that Mr. President will conduct a thorough investigation into this issue. Betta Edu is Better.”
