Court Affirms Alex Otti As Governor Of Abia State

January 12, 2024

In a significant development, the highest court in the land has reserved its judgment regarding the appeals submitted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) concerning the election of Alex Otti.

However, on Friday, the Supreme Court made a groundbreaking declaration, announcing Alex Otti, a member of the Labour Party, as the legitimate governor of Abia State.
The verdict comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Otti as the winner of the election held on March 18, 2023.

With an impressive tally of 175,466 votes, Otti surpassed his closest rival, Okey Ahiwe of the PDP, who garnered 88,529 votes. It is worth noting that the Court of Appeal in Lagos had previously dismissed the petitions filed by Okey and the PDP, as well as Ikechi Emenike of the APC, who sought to challenge Otti’s election.

One of the key arguments put forth by Okey’s legal representative, Uche Ihediuwa, SAN, during the proceedings was that his client’s vote count in the Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia had been unjustly reduced.
