January 12, 2024

In a heartfelt gesture, President Bola Tinubu expressed his sympathy to former President Goodluck Jonathan following the demise of his sister, Obebhatein Jonathan. The condolence message was conveyed through a statement issued by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale. The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Condoles with Dr. Goodluck Jonathan over Sister’s Passing,’ offered words of comfort and support during this difficult time.

Obebhatein Jonathan, affectionately known as Amissi, played various roles in her lifetime, including being a teacher, businesswoman, mother, and grandmother. Tragically, she passed away on January 11, 2024, at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, after a brief illness at the age of 70.

Described as a devout Christian, a woman of virtue, and a source of inspiration to many within and beyond her community, Obebhatein’s legacy will be cherished. The statement also mentioned that the family has scheduled her burial for Tuesday, February 16, 2024, with specific details to be announced soon.

President Tinubu urged Jonathan to find solace in the enduring legacy of Amissi, who dedicated her life to serving God and humanity. He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of her soul and extended his wishes for comfort to all those mourning this painful loss.

Obebhatein is survived by her three children, siblings (including Jonathan himself), and her mother, Mama Eunice Afeni-Jonathan.
