The Supreme Court has scheduled the judgment for the appeal in the Kano State governorship election for Friday, January 12, 2024. Additionally, the apex court is expected to deliver judgments in six other governorship disputes on the same day, barring any last-minute changes.
According to a report by LEADERSHIP, the Supreme Court had previously reserved judgment on governorship election cases in Plateau, Delta, and Abia States.
Barrister Bashir Tudun Wuzirci, the secretary of the legal team representing the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), confirmed the development to the online newspaper, Newspoint Nigeria, on Wednesday night. He stated that the court instructed each party to have a maximum of two counsels present during the judgment due to the seven judgments that will be delivered on that day.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State and his party, NNPP, filed an appeal against the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which upheld his removal as pronounced by the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.
To recap, the Tribunal had removed Governor Yusuf from office and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw his certificate of return and issue it to Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.
Governor Yusuf, dissatisfied with the Tribunal’s judgment, subsequently appealed to the Court of Appeal. However, the appellate court, while affirming his removal, also ruled that the governor was not a party member at the time of the election and therefore could not have been validly nominated as a candidate.
