SECURITY: In a devastating incident that occurred on Thursday, armed herders launched an attack on several communities in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the loss of lives of security personnel. Major General Sunday Igbinowanhia, the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, confirmed that three security personnel made the ultimate sacrifice during the assault. Among the deceased were two soldiers and one member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Furthermore, two soldiers sustained injuries during the encounter and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Nigerian Air Force hospital in Makurdi.
Major General Igbinowanhia released a statement on Saturday, providing details of the incident. He revealed that troops from Operation Whirl Stroke, stationed in Akwu, Agatu Local Government Area, were alerted by the sight of residents fleeing the Okokolo community. Acting swiftly, the troops engaged the armed herders in a fierce gun battle that lasted for three hours, successfully repelling the attackers and inflicting significant casualties on their side.
The Force Commander explained, “Upon investigation, the troops were informed that suspected armed herdsmen were advancing towards the town with the intention to launch an attack. Without hesitation, the troops mobilized and proceeded to the community, which is approximately 15 kilometers away from their base.”
He continued, “Upon arrival, the troops encountered the bandits carrying out their assault on the community and engaged them in a prolonged exchange of fire lasting three hours.”
Thanks to the bravery and determination of the troops, the attack was thwarted, forcing the armed herders to retreat in disarray while evacuating their dead and wounded comrades.
However, the victory came at a heavy price, as three courageous soldiers laid down their lives to protect the inhabitants of Okokolo and prevent the community from being overrun.
In addition to the fallen heroes, two other soldiers sustained injuries and were promptly evacuated to the Nigerian Air Force hospital in Makurdi for urgent medical attention.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the immense sacrifices made by our security personnel in their unwavering commitment to safeguarding our communities. The nation mourns the loss of these brave souls and extends its deepest condolences to their families.
