Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has appointed Chief Olayide Adelami as the Deputy Governor of the state. This decision comes shortly after the Governor announced the dissolution of his cabinet members.
According to local media reports, Chief Olayide Adelami hails from Owo, the same hometown and local government as the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. He is a former Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly and retired in April 2018. He also contested against the late Governor Akeredolu in the 2020 primary election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Ondo State House of Assembly has received the name of the new nominee for the position of Deputy Governor. The nominee is scheduled to appear before the State Assembly for screening on Thursday, January 25, 2024. The letter was received by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has dissolved all members of the executive council in the state. The announcement was made in the early hours of Wednesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.
Governor Aiyedatiwa stated that the dissolution takes immediate effect and directed the affected officials to hand over all government documents in their possession to the Permanent Secretary.
“All members of the cabinet are to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior administrative officers in their respective offices,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said.
In addition, all senior special assistants and special assistants have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect.
“All the affected officials are directed to hand over all government properties in their possession,” the statement said.
With this dissolution, the Governor is expected to appoint new cabinet members to work with him in his administration.
It is worth noting that some senior special assistants, special assistants, and commissioners resigned when the late Rotimi Akeredolu passed away due to illness.
Akeredolu died after his battle with cancer, following medical treatment in Germany before returning to Nigeria.
The 67-year-old spent several months on medical leave before his return to Nigeria for health reasons in September 2023.
Since the Ondo State House of Assembly swore in Aiyedatiwa as Governor on December 27, 2023, there has been great anticipation and speculation about who will become the new Deputy Governor.
The Governor is expected to announce his new cabinet soon, as there are high expectations regarding the new list of appointments.
