In a recent event organized by a Student, Comr. Benjamin Bisong, the President of Boki students worldwide, the significance of student inclusion in government became evident. The student week, featuring skill acquisition programs, brought together students from different backgrounds. However, it was regrettable to witness the lack of support from both Federal and State representatives, as well as elites from Boki. Even the Boki Head of Local Government, HOLAG, declined to offer assistance.
On a more positive note, the Ikom worldwide president successfully organized a student week for Ikom students. The event received ample support from the Minority Leader at the State House of Assembly and the NYCN chairman from Ikom, showcasing the impact that proactive engagement can have on students’ lives.
These contrasting scenarios have highlighted the pressing need for Federal and State representatives to prioritize student welfare and foster a student inclusive government. Bearing this in mind, the students of Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency have put forth several requests to their MP, Hon. Sir Victor Abang:
1. Free Transportation: The students request free transportation to educational institutions throughout Hon. Abang’s tenure. Recognizing the financial burden transportation costs impose on students, this initiative aims to ensure equal access to education for all.
2. Annual Bursaries: The students seek the establishment of annual bursaries for students from Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency until the end of Hon. Abang’s term. This financial support would alleviate the challenges faced by students and enable them to focus on their studies.
3. JAMB CBT Center: Leveraging his influence as a federal representative and a Boki native, Hon. Abang is urged to establish a JAMB CBT center in Boki. Currently, students must travel to distant locations such as Ikom, Ogoja, or Obudu for registration, posing safety risks. The creation of a local center would provide convenience and ensure a safer registration process.
4. Student Interaction Sessions: The students request that Hon. Abang organizes regular interaction sessions with them. This initiative would allow students to express their concerns, share ideas, and foster a closer relationship between the representative and the youth.
5. Free JAMB Registration: The students hope to benefit from Hon. Abang’s office by receiving free JAMB registration every year until the end of his term. This support would alleviate the financial burden on students and encourage their pursuit of higher education.
Sen. Chief Ayi Godswill, a concerned student and constituent, emphasizes Hon. Abang’s reputation as a compassionate and caring individual. The students firmly believe that he possesses the qualities needed to fulfill their requests and create a government that includes and uplifts the student population.
As the voice of the students grows stronger, it is clear that the time for a student inclusive government is now. The Federal and State representatives must heed this call, prioritize student welfare, and work towards a future that empowers the youth—the leaders of tomorrow.
