Thirteen suspects have been apprehended by the Nigeria Police Force in connection with the savage attacks that occurred in Emure-Ekiti, resulting in the tragic deaths of two traditional rulers and the abduction of students and teachers. The police high command disclosed that these suspects, who were detained following initial investigations, are currently assisting the police in their ongoing inquiry.
In response to these distressing incidents, the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has taken decisive action. On Thursday, he ordered the immediate deployment of Assistant Inspector General of Police, Abiodun Asabi, along with additional personnel and resources, to Zone 17 in Akure, Ondo State. This zone encompasses the Ondo and Ekiti State police commands and spans an expansive land area of approximately 21,853 square kilometers.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, conveyed these developments in a statement issued on Thursday. Adejobi emphasized that the deployments were made with the primary objective of swiftly reestablishing peace and order in the affected areas.
Adejobi quoted the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, as strongly condemning the recent killings of two revered traditional rulers, namely Oba Olusola Olatunji, the Olumojo of Imojo-Ekiti, and Oba David Ogunsakin, the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, both in Ekiti State. The Inspector General of Police also condemned the abduction of school children and teachers in Emure-Ekiti. Consequently, he promptly took measures to address the security challenges in the region. To ensure the expeditious restoration of peace and order, the Inspector General ordered the immediate deployment of Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Abiodun Asabi, to Zone 17 in Akure, accompanied by additional personnel and resources.
The newly assigned Assistant Inspector General of Police has been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing a comprehensive and well-coordinated security response to bring an end to these unfortunate security incidents in Ekiti and parts of Ondo State. His mandate also includes ensuring effective collaboration among security agencies for optimal effectiveness in tackling the security concerns within Ekiti State.
Adejobi further confirmed the arrest of thirteen suspects, resulting from preliminary investigations. The Inspector General of Police reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring that justice is served and that the perpetrators of these heinous acts are apprehended and brought to justice. He assured the public that every necessary measure would be taken to apprehend the culprits and prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
The Force Public Relations Officer urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with the police and other security agencies as they work tirelessly to restore peace and security to the affected areas.
In related news, the Ekiti State Police had previously announced the arrest of five suspected kidnappers. They had launched a manhunt with the assistance of hunters, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun, Odua Peoples Congress, and other partners.
In response to the tragic killings of the two monarchs, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State paid condolence visits to the palaces of the two communities and expressed his condolences to the residents.
Furthermore, President Bola Tinubu condemned the killings of the two traditional rulers and assured that the perpetrators would face justice. A statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, conveyed Tinubu’s strong denunciation of the mindless and brutal bloodshed, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that the culprits would not escape the consequences of their actions.
