A gas explosion occurred around 4:10 p.m. on Sunday in Ijora Badia, located in the Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, injuring at least 15 individuals.
The blast was triggered by a 25kg gas cylinder inside a mini shop that reportedly housed five similar cylinders. This shop was situated within a bungalow containing 15 self-contained rooms and seven additional retail spaces.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the incident in a statement. She attributed the explosion to improper handling of gas products, which led to a leak ignited by a nearby flame.
“This incident was due to inadequate management of gas products, allowing gas to escape and come into contact with an ignition source, resulting in the explosion,” Adeseye explained.
Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished, and the remaining gas cylinders were safely evacuated to mitigate further risk. “The fire was promptly controlled, and the remaining cylinders were removed to ensure safety. The situation has now returned to normal,” she added.
Although no fatalities were reported, Adeseye revealed that the 15 injured individuals suffered varying degrees of burns. Some received first aid on-site, while others were transported to local hospitals for more extensive treatment, with none of the injuries being life-threatening.
The rapid response involved teams from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
