The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended an invitation to Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to participate in the observation of the upcoming rerun and by-election scheduled for February. In a recent announcement, Hauwa Habib, the acting Director of Electoral Party Monitoring at INEC, revealed that interested organizations can apply by utilizing the online portal. The deadline for application submission has been set for January 17, 2024.
Emphasizing the importance of following the proper application procedure, Habib stressed that completion of the designated application form (EC14A(l)) is the sole accepted method for applying. Alongside the application form, applicants are required to provide supporting documents that verify their legal registration status, demonstrate previous registration with INEC, and include any submitted observation reports. It is crucial for applicants to note that falsification of documents will lead to disqualification and may result in prosecution.
Upon review and approval, the list of successful observer groups will be made available on INEC’s official website as well as the EPM observer’s WhatsApp platform. The rerun and by-election are slated to occur concurrently on February 3, 2024, across multiple constituencies nationwide. These electoral activities aim to fill existing vacancies within the state and federal legislatures.
