In a significant development, the Supreme Court has affirmed Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s election as the Governor of Lagos State. This decision follows earlier rulings by the election petition tribunal and the Court of Appeal in the state, which also upheld Sanwo-Olu’s victory.
The election was vigorously contested by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, who filed an appeal on October 7, 2023, citing 21 grounds to challenge the State Governorship Tribunal’s decision to uphold Sanwo-Olu’s re-election.
A three-man panel comprising Justice Yargata Nimpa, Justice Samuel Bola, and Justice Paul Bassey delivered the judgment at the Appeal Court. They affirmed the tribunal’s verdict, confirming Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor and Obafemi Hamzat as the Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
Furthermore, the appeal lodged by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour against Sanwo-Olu’s re-election and that of his deputy was dismissed by the court.
