PRESIDENCY, In a devastating blow to Nigeria and the African banking industry, the presidency has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank. This news comes as American authorities confirm that a helicopter carrying six people crashed in California on Friday night.
According to the Special Adviser Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and their son were on board the helicopter. “This is a significant loss for the Nigeria and Africa banking industry. Wigwe had a grand vision to make Access Holdings Africa’s largest bank, fueled by an unquenchable thirst for acquisitions. He also made a positive impact in his community by establishing a university, which he believed would make a difference by focusing on entrepreneurship,” the adviser said.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, also expressed her condolences in a post, confirming that Herbert Wigwe, the group CEO of Access Bank in Lagos, was on board the helicopter with his wife and son.
The cause of the crash is still unclear, but reports suggest that no survivors have been found. The crash occurred near the Nevada border in California on Friday evening.
The Federal Aviation Administration, under the US Department of Transportation, released a statement confirming that the helicopter involved was a Eurocopter EC 130. They stated that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the incident and provide updates.
