Are NDDC Projects Mainly For Cross River South – Fabian Okwajie

June 12, 2024

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is a government agency established with the mandate to develop the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Its aim is to facilitate the rapid and sustainable development of the Niger Delta into an economically prosperous, socially stable, and politically peaceful region. The states under the NDDC’s jurisdiction include Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Edo, Ondo, Abia, and Imo.

In Cross River State, it appears that most representatives to the NDDC have hailed from the southern part of the state. Consequently, a significant number of NDDC projects are concentrated in southern Cross River. In my own Local Government Area, Boki, I have yet to see any completed or ongoing NDDC projects, raising the question of whether NDDC projects are mainly for Cross River South.

Those representing Cross River State in the NDDC should adopt a more inclusive approach in their representation, ensuring that projects are distributed beyond the southern part of the state. Substantial funds are allocated annually to Cross River State for NDDC projects, and it is crucial that all regions within the state benefit from these initiatives. Additionally, the commission’s activities, such as the distribution of educational materials, foods stuff, scholarships, and more, should be equitably spread across the entire state. It is imperative that every part of Cross River feels the presence and impact of NDDC projects.

To ensure equitable development, it is vital for stakeholders, including community leaders and concerned citizens, to advocate for a balanced allocation of NDDC resources across all regions of Cross River State. Transparency and accountability in the planning and execution of projects must be prioritized to prevent regional disparities. By fostering collaboration between the NDDC and local communities, we can ensure that the developmental needs of areas like Boki and other underserved regions are addressed. This holistic approach will not only promote fairness but also enhance the overall impact of the NDDC’s mission, contributing to the inclusive growth and stability of the entire state.
