Flood Ravages Olum Community: Residents Call for Urgent Support, Chairman Intervenes

Urgent Government Intervention Needed as Flood Devastates Olum Community

Severe flooding has struck the Olum community in Boki LGA, Cross River State. This disaster has caused widespread destruction. Indeed, homes, shops, and personal property are affected, and victims are urgently calling for government assistance.

In response to this crisis, Boki LGA Supervisor for Agriculture, Mr. Ubua Kingsley Ajah, visited Olum. He assessed the situation and spoke directly with residents. Notably, his visit followed a directive from LGA Chairman, Eti-Eka Hon. Mrs. Beatrice Etta Nyiam, who expressed sympathy and pledged prompt support.

During the visit, emotional testimonies highlighted the extent of the damage. For instance, one victim, a chemist owner named Precious, shared her painful experience:

> “I wasn’t around when the rain started. By the time I returned, my entire shop was under water. Most of the medicines in my chemist were destroyed, and even my refrigerator was damaged. It was shocking to see water coming up from the ground itself,” she said.

Additionally, another resident recounted how floodwaters damaged his home and destroyed his car engine.

Furthermore, Supervisor Ajah noted that the bridge connecting Olum-Wula to Buja had also sustained serious damage. He emphasized the urgent need for intervention and made a direct appeal to LGA Chairman:

> “We are calling on Hon. Mrs. Beatrice Etta Nyiam to come to the rescue of the Olum people. This situation requires immediate attention to prevent further damage and displacement,” he stated.

In her earlier statement, Chairman Nyiam reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting flood victims. She encouraged residents to prioritize safety and heed warnings from local authorities.

As damage assessments continue, the people of Olum remain hopeful. They sincerely hope relief efforts will be mobilized quickly to help rebuild their lives.
